Storm spotter class scheduled for March 25 also canceled

The city of Roswell public forum for Wards 1 and 2 that was scheduled for Thursday, March 19, has been canceled.

The city’s decision was made amid the ongoing COVID-19 concerns and the need for caution, according to a press release issued by the city.

On Wednesday, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a public health emergency and called on citizens to avoid public gatherings. On Thursday, state Health Secretary Kathy Kunkel issued an order temporarily prohibiting gatherings of 100 or more people.

The city of Roswell will continue to monitor the ongoing situation, according to the press release. Decisions will be made regarding the status of future planned public forums, which in the past have often been attended by less than 100 people, as the dates for those events approach. The next local public forum is scheduled in May.

The city also announced that a March 25 Roswell storm-spotter class has been canceled by the National Weather Service in response to warnings for people to avoid public gatherings during the current COVID-19 situation. That class was scheduled to be held at the Daniels Leadership Center on the New Mexico Military Institute campus.
