Most Chaves County staff will not be working today.

The county has given employees the day off for Good Friday. The Sheriff’s office will continue to function.

The county also announced Thursday that the closure of all of its buildings with the exception of the courthouse — due to the coronavirus emergency that had been scheduled to last until April 10 — would be extended until April 30, in keeping with orders from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Department of Health about social distancing, remote work for most employees and limited gatherings of five or fewer people.

According to a statement from County Manager Stanton Riggs, county business will be conducted by phone, email or online. People will be allowed in buildings by appointment only.

People also can conduct business with the County Clerk’s and Treasurer’s offices using their drive-up windows. Payments can be made by credit card, checks or money order. Cash will not be accepted.
