Angelica Martinez
01/11/1936 — 04/07/2020

Angelica Martinez, 84, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. There will be a private graveside service at South Park Cemetery on Monday, April 13, 2020, at 11:00 am. A Memorial is planned for a later date in the summer of 2020.

On January 11, 1936, Angelica was born to Eli Perez-Ortega and Oliva Perez-Hernandez at La Palma, Tamasopo, San Luis Potosi. She married J. Ventura Martinez on June 10, 1956, in Alaquines, S.L.P. The family arrived in Roswell, NM, in September of 1964.

Angelica was a school teacher in Mexico prior to her marriage and move to Roswell. She was a homemaker, and once her children were older, she worked as a seamstress at Levi Strauss for over 20 years.

She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church for 56 years, where she attended daily services. She was a Cursillista, a Eucharistic minister, visited the homebound, delivering daily messages from the church. She was lovingly known by the Priests, as their “Esquincla,” a term of endearment given by them for her teasing and happy nature. She led many people to the saving grace of Christ through her words and her actions and especially her prayers.

Angelica, “Buela” was an avid supporter of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s activities. She could be found at many sporting, school, and church events wherever they were participating. Education and especially reading and writing were a very important part of her life. Angelica taught her children to read at an early age and provided books of many varieties to help open their minds. She was especially proud of her children’s educational success, seeing all nine of them receive College Degrees, many with their Masters Degrees, and some with Doctorates. Some areas of education received by her family are in Education, Nursing, Therapy, Management, Computer technology, Engineering, Medicine, and Ministry.
