RDR Sports wanted to take time to wish all moms a Happy Mother’s Day. With the coronavirus affecting so many lives in the world, RDR sports wanted to have Goddard softball coach Katie Shanor share what Mother’s Day means to her.
More than a mother
Putting into words what kind of an impact and influence my mom has been to me is difficult. I am not sure where to start. I have been blessed to be able to call such an incredible person “mom.” My mother has made a huge impact on my life and still continues to be, each and every day. Let me introduce my mom. My mom is Heidi Shanor, an incredible woman who has dedicated her whole life to education, her family and her friends. She is my number one fan, my motivator, my role model and my best friend.
Growing up with an educator for a mother was never easy. She made sure she taught us (my brothers and I) the importance of learning, working hard and never giving up. Along the way, we had plenty of laughs, several groundings and memories that will last a lifetime. As a result, my brothers and I have been able to achieve great things and have been blessed with opportunities. She is the reason why I chose to enter a career in education and continue to develop my education.

I have learned, and continue to learn, valuable lessons from my mom. I watched her for years work thanklessly, going above and beyond for her students. I watched her teach students who are successful. I watched her raise us as she completed not one, but two dossiers, earning her masters and striving to continue to learn.
She then went back to school, again, to get her administrative license and become a principal. All the while, she helped raise three kids and made it to all of our games/extracurricular activities. I have learned that education and hard work is important. I have learned that it is important to give it your all in everything you do.
I have learned to never give up — that if you fall short, you get back up and go for it again. My mom has taught me so many life lessons that I cannot even begin to describe. Most importantly, my mom has taught me that family comes first, to always cherish your friendships, to always see the good in every situation and person, and how to love.
I can only hope that one day I can be half the mom she has been to me. I hope to someday have kids that look up to me the way my brothers and I do to her.
Happy Mother’s Day. I love you,
