Joe Lee Smith

A golden heart stopped beating a hard-working man laid to rest.

Joe Lee Smith passed away from this life on April 28, 2020.

Joe Lee was born in Fort Stanton New Mexico on April 3, 1942 to Jessie Lee Smith and Mamie Lucille (Jones) Smith.

He lived in Capitan New Mexico with his parents and two sisters Judy Irene (Smith) Nichols and Joy Kay (Smith) Wrye. He attended Capitan high school where he excelled in sports. He played varsity football all four years. He was also on the basketball and track team. He was a member of the Honor Society. Joe Lee graduated in 1960 then attended Arizona Junior College on a football scholarship. Later he attended Eastern New Mexico University and then Western New Mexico University where he received his Bachelors of arts degree in 1966 and in 1971 he received his Masters degree in education. He taught school and coached sports in Silver City New Mexico. In 1968 he moved his family to Southern California for a teaching and coaching job in Perris CA. He taught algebra and drivers education. He coached varsity football, track and girl’s varsity basketball. He had a very successful career at Perris Union High School. He led his varsity football team to many victories and a championship. He helped coach and set a foundation for young men to meet their goals in life! He was proud of each and everyone of them! He was named Southern California Coach of the Year.

Joe Lee married the love of his life Rose Marie Houck in April 1964. They enjoyed life together with their three children Rhoda, Kim, and Eric. He enjoyed taking his children camping fishing and many other recreational activities.

He is survived by his wife Rose Marie Smith of 56 years his two children Kim Marie Smith and son Eric Lee Smith. Five grandchildren Devon Lee Smith of Washington Jesse Lee Smith of California, Estee Merrill and husband of California, Sydney Marie Bolden and husband of Ruidoso New Mexico, Dylan Lee Smith and wife of Ruidoso New Mexico. Seven great grandchildren Serena and Lily Anna Mendoza of California, Brayden Lee Smith of Nebraska, Isis Smith of California, Camri Marie and Paisley James Bolden of Ruidoso New Mexico, and Casey Gail Smith of Ruidoso New Mexico.

At this time there will not be any services. At a later date his children will release his and his wife’s ashes at the top of The Gap, The Capitan Mountains.
