Volunteers look for increased census numbers

Lisa Dunlap Photo Local volunteers staff a table Saturday at the Dexter Fire and Rescue facility on East Second Street to encourage people to complete their census surveys. An event also was held in Hagerman. More than 200 gift certificates to local restaurants were available to give to people who have completed the survey or did so on site. People in rural areas often have a more difficult time being counted. The volunteers were making internet connections and computers available to people who wanted to complete surveys that way. Each person counted represents $3,745 in federal funding per year, and population counts also determine congressional and state legislative representation.
