Roswell police have arrested an Artesia man following a Friday night double shooting in the southeast section of the city, which left one man dead and another wounded.
Tyler Aaron Kelley, 22, was arrested early Saturday afternoon and is being held without bond at the Chaves County Detention Center, according to a press release from the Roswell Police Department.
Kelley is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, aggravated battery and tampering with evidence in connection with the shooting of two men outside a 300 block of East Jefferson Street residence at about 10:30 p.m., according to the release.
Investigators believe Kelley shot the two men and then disposed of the handgun he allegedly used.
The two wounded males — both 19 years old — received gunshot wounds and were driven to a hospital for treatment before police arrived on the scene, the release states.
Marcelleno Briseno, of Roswell, who suffered at least two gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The other male, who had two non-life- threatening gunshot wounds to his arm, received treatment at the hospital and was subsequently released.
According to the press release, Kelley was among multiple people at the 300 block of East Jefferson Street crime scene when officers arrived. He was eventually taken into police custody as a result of the initial investigation where he was held overnight before he was formally arrested.
Investigators determined the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between Kelley and the man shot in the arm. The release states the man who was wounded in the arm and Briseno had gone to the East Jefferson Street house to confront Kelley, who then allegedly shot Briseno and the other man shortly after they arrived outside the house and stepped out of the vehicle they arrived in.
A third male who was driving the vehicle then drove the two wounded men to the hospital after the shooting.
