The Sunrise Optimist Club would like to announce the winners of its local essay contest held prior to social distancing. The club put up $600 of prize money for the winners to be used at their discretion. The winners were Jonah Pinon and Jennifer Tekut.

Essay Chairman Gary Smith commented, “I’m very pleased with our winners, they should do well at district.”

Both students will have a chance to compete in the district competition later this summer.

Jonah is 14 years old and the son of Rick and Yolie Pinon. He attended Sidney Gutierrez Middle School and will attend the New Mexico Military Institute in the fall. Jonah is a Life Scout with Troop 149. He hopes to pursue a career in aerospace engineering and work for Sandia National Labs or Space X.

Jennifer attends Gateway Christian School and is the daughter of Thomas and Kim Tekut. Jennifer enjoys art, writing short stories and composing music. Her future plans are to go into the medical field.
