Letter: Less constrained speech led to politics’ downhill slide

I was born when Herbert Hoover was president. I lived through the Great Depression and World War II and watched as FDR rebuilt the nation and saved us from fascism and communism.

One thing I remember was that politicians were more restrained in their speech. The president didn’t sneer and insult his opponents or critics and Democrats and Republicans could be friends.

People like Rush Limbaugh ended those days by referring to Democrats as “pointy-headed liberals” or “libertards.” It has been all downhill since then.

Now the president calls people names and nobody even comments on it.
