Alice Marie Winn Stiles

Alice Marie Winn Stiles, beloved wife, mother, daughter, aunt, teacher and friend, died on June 15, 2020 surrounded by her husband and three children. She was 69. She entered this world on June 5, 1951 in Roswell, NM, born to James Austin Winn and Maurine Davis. Alice grew up in Dexter and attended Dexter High School. She loved her childhood friends and held on to those faithful friends all her life. She attended Eastern New Mexico University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and became of member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sisterhood.  On August 22, 1970, she married the love of her life, Larry Charles Stiles. This August would be their 50th wedding anniversary.  She gave birth to Alison in 1976 and then twins, Julie and Jacob, in 1978.  Alice taught for the Roswell Independent School District for 34 years educating 3rd graders, 6th graders, and as the Director of the HOST program. Mrs. Stiles pursued a Master’s degree in Educational Administration while raising her family and teaching.  It took several years and perseverance, but she earned her Master’s in 1989. Alice was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an Honor Society for Teachers, and Who’s Who of American Teachers. Mrs. Stiles was awarded the Laureate Award for Excellence in Teaching and Exemplary HOST Site for 4 years.

Alice delighted in her family and friends! She loved a party and celebrated all life had to offer! She enjoyed reading and gathering with friends for Book Club. She spent her summers teaching swimming lessons and loved to swim and sunbathe. We figure she baked and decorated well over 350 birthday cakes and planned fun, themed parties for her loved ones. Family gatherings at holidays and all forms of hospitality were important to her.  She was wonderful at making all people, of all ages, feel accepted, welcomed, valued and loved. She will be greatly missed on this earth, and we look forward to the day we are together again celebrating the Savior for all eternity.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. James Winn and Maurine Davis Dodson; her brother, James David Winn; and her stepfather, S.M. Dodson. She is survived by her husband, Larry; daughter Alison Stiles Nicholson and her husband, Brian, of Lubbock, TX, and their children: Margaret, Samuel, Thomas, Jacob and Elizabeth; daughter Julie Stiles Lynn of Roswell, NM, and her sons: Eli, Noah and Luke; son Jacob Taylor Stiles and his wife, Valerie, of Odessa, TX, and their children: Riley, Wyatt, Caden and Carrington.

A memorial service to honor Alice will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 20, 2020 at The Liberty, 312 N. Virginia, Roswell, NM.  A gathering will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday, June 19, 2020 at Ballard Funeral Home.

Tribute donations in Alice’s memory are gratefully appreciated by her family to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) and the Cowboy Bell Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church, Roswell, NM.
