Two new COVID-19 cases reported in Chaves County

Two new cases of COVID-19 in Chaves County were among the 138 reported Wednesday by the New Mexico Department of Health.

The department’s daily update also pushes the total number of cases in the state over 10,000.

Chaves County’s total cases now number 61 with 30 considered recovered.

Five additional deaths in New Mexico were also reported Wednesday including a man in his 40s from McKinley County and a male inmate in his 50s at the Otero County Prison. The rest were age 70 or above. Four had been hospitalized and all but the Otero inmate had underlying health conditions.

The state’s total number of deaths is 452.

Otero County facilities are among the state’s hot spots for COVID-19, with 30 new cases among those held at the federal Otero County Processing Center and eight at the Otero Prison. The prison has a total of 306 cases and the processing center 138.

McKinley and Bernalillo each had 20 new cases, Doña Ana had 18 and San Juan had 13. Other counties reporting new cases in single digits were Curry, Lea, Otero, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe and Valencia.

The state continues to adjust its total numbers as data is further investigated. Five cases in Bernalillo, Doña Ana, San Juan and Santa Fe counties were determined to be duplicates and one in McKinley County was not lab-confirmed. The state’s total number of cases is 10,065, with 4,351 designated as recovered.

Wednesday, 161 people were hospitalized for COVID-19.

The state has conducted 271,553 tests for the virus, with 5,188 of those in Chaves County.
