A man wanted in Colorado on sexual assault charges against a child was arrested by Chaves County deputies hours after having led them on a vehicle pursuit.

Lonell Depriest, 39, was detained at about 5:10 p.m. Friday after deputies received a call about the man hitchhiking along U.S. Highway 285 North near milepost 121.

When deputies and New Mexico State Police responded, Depriest tried to flee into a nearby field, but was soon caught and arrested.

A woman who was with Depriest when he was arrested was not injured, Herrington said.

He added it is not clear why the adult woman was with Depriest at the time or what her connection is to him.

“She wouldn’t say that he was keeping her against her will or anything like that, but he kept saying he was going to marry her,” Herrington said.

Depriest’s arrest came just hours after he was involved in a Friday morning chase with law enforcement after being spotted by deputies in a stolen vehicle.

The chase began in Roswell and deputies were eventually forced to discontinue the pursuit because of Depriest’s erratic driving.

Later, the vehicle was found abandoned at a truck stop on the north end of Roswell. In a post with the suspect’s mugshot on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page before his arrest, Herrington warned people not to approach Depriest, describing him as armed without a handgun and dangerous.

Depriest, Herrington said, will be extradited to Colorado to face charges.
