A semi-trailer caught fire early Tuesday morning just outside Roswell.

Personnel from the Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department and Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the blaze at about 5:30 a.m. on Highway 70 northeast of the city, at milepost 351, according to Jim Higgins, chief of the Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department.

No one was injured in the blaze and though the truck was still drivable, the semi-trailer and beer being transported were total losses, he said.

Higgins added the back of the trailer was consumed by fire when crews arrived.

Though the cause of the fire is not known for certain, Higgins said the speculation is the fire was sparked by equipment failure, most likely dragging brakes.
