A teenager accused of accidentally shooting his cousin to death turned himself in to Roswell police Thursday afternoon.

Ethan Benitez, 16, went to the Roswell Police Department Thursday at 3 p.m. and turned himself over to police, a day after a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of involuntary manslaughter and unlawful possession of a handgun, according to a press release issued Thursday by RPD.

Investigators, according to the release, believe Benitez was handling a handgun while under the influence of marijuana July 8 at about 10 p.m. in a southwest Roswell apartment. The gun is thought to have accidentally fired, with one round striking Omar Benitez, 22, in the left wrist and chest.

Omar Benitez was subsequently transported to a hospital after medics and police arrived. He died about two hours later.

Two other people were in the apartment at the time the shooting occurred, one of whom witnessed the shooting, according to the press release.
