The city of Roswell will celebrate Women’s Equality Day with Mayor Dennis Kintigh reading a proclamation live on the city’s Facebook page, according to a press release issued by the city.

The mayoral proclamation will be read at 1 p.m. Aug. 26, the day in 1920 when the U.S. secretary of state signed the federal proclamation recognizing Congress’ ratification, several days earlier, of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

Women’s Equality Day is proclaimed nationally by the president each year. It was first celebrated in 1973. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.

The local proclamation reading can be viewed at facebook.com/RoswellNMGovernment.
