After five days of instruction, Roswell Independent School District said it was able to work out the technical problem that marred the remote learning start to the school year.

Just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, district officials learned that a test run of the software successfully loaded data from all 10,500 RISD students.

“If you heard a big cheer, that was us,” Roswell High School Principal Pilar Carrasco said.

Tuesday morning, Superintendent Mike Gottlieb said about 2,000 students were still unable to login to Canvas, the district’s learning management software. About 136 were at Roswell High, Carrasco said.

The problem was in the Systems Interoperability Framework, or SIF, which is a set of standards for data transfer software, Gottlieb said.

The SIF allows data to flow from Powerschool, the district’s student information software, to Canvas.

“Everything has to be set up correctly. You’re talking lots of lines of code,” Gottlieb said. “If something doesn’t match, it doesn’t send it all across.”

The district’s information technology staff of six worked with technical support staff from the New Mexico Public Education Department and Canvas to find the problem.

“The PED really helped us with that issue and helped us get the technical support we needed. Once the PED stepped in and got us the help, we were able to make all the changes and run it several times to make sure,” Gottlieb said.

Carrasco said online instruction had gone well for about 93% of RHS students through Tuesday.

Carrasco said he collaborated with his fellow high school principals in the district during the issues with Canvas.

“It’s just been such a district effort to get this accomplished. We’re finding ways to troubleshoot for solutions as a team,” he said.

He said he anticipates some students might still need assistance to make sure they have the correct login information for Canvas.
