A man who was injured in Tuesday night’s double shooting in Roswell has died.

A post on the Roswell Police Department’s Facebook page states Mark Montoya, 33, of Roswell, died from his wounds Thursday morning.

Montoya was one of two people found shot multiple times Tuesday night in a backyard in the 500 block of South Kansas Avenue. Initially described as critically injured, police had said that Montoya was expected to survive his wounds after being airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

However, Thursday’s post said that Montoya’s condition had taken an unexpected turn and he had died. Crystal Aguilar, 38, of Roswell, who was the other victim, was found deceased at the scene Tuesday night when police arrived.

According to the Thursday Facebook post, the investigation conducted by the RPD is now a double homicide investigation.

Police are currently searching for Ignacio Juan Gamez, 29, of Roswell, who has been described by police as a person of interest in the investigation.

Though he has not been formally charged in connection with the shooting, police said Wednesday they want to speak with Gamez as part of their ongoing investigation.

Electronic court records indicate that Gamez is wanted on an outstanding warrant for failure to comply with conditions of probation in an unrelated case.

Thursday’s Facebook post stated that other people are believed to have been at the scene when the shooting happened at about 8 p.m. Tuesday. Those individuals might be able to help in the investigation and are encouraged to contact the police at 575-624-6770.
