A two-vehicle crash and poor driving conditions prompted the closure of a portion of U.S. 285 south of Roswell Tuesday.

Officer Dusty Francisco, public information officer with the New Mexico State Police, said Wednesday U.S. 285 north and southbound between mile posts 81 and 87 was closed from 12:19 to 5:12 p.m. because of the response to the crash and blowing dirt that created zero-visibility.

A message posted by the New Mexico Department of Transportation at the time announced that as a result of the closure, motorists on the highway were being rerouted to Pueblo Road and to New Mexico State Road 2.

Francisco said the zero-visibility is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The NMSP responded to the crash at about 11:55 a.m. near mile post 83 north of Artesia, where initial findings of the investigation indicate the driver of a 2007 Toyota passenger car rear-ended a 2017 Toyota SUV while heading north.
