Online health expo set for Saturday

The second annual Chaves County Health Expo occurs Saturday entirely online.

“With COVID-19, we were unable to host a big expo like we did last year, so we re-envisioned the expo to be 100% virtual,” said Jennifer Smith, coordinator for the Chaves County Health Council. “We know our community desperately needs this expo. And we didn’t want to postpone or cancel such a needed event, so we tried to come up with the best alternative that we could to reach as many people as possible.”

County health councils are funded and empowered by the state of New Mexico to assess and meet local public health needs.

The Chaves County Health Expo was launched last year at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center to provide as much information as possible to area residents about the mental, behavioral and physical health resources available in the county. Supporting services also provide information. They include health and disability insurance providers or experts, fitness programs, early childhood education and health career educational programs. Last year, health screenings and services were able to be provided, as well.

Smith said this year’s expo starts Saturday at 9 a.m. with a live event on the health council’s Facebook page. The expo closes at 3 p.m. with another Facebook live segment. In between, videos about participating groups and their contact information will be aired on Twitter and Instagram (@CCHEALTHCOUNCIL). After Saturday, the videos can be viewed on the group’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
