Letter: Federal mismanagement has led to COVID-19 deaths

Three reputable models are predicting our COVID-19 deaths will exceed 400,000 by Jan. 1. Sadly, this death rate will have progressed from zero deaths to 400,000 in roughly nine months. In comparison the combat death rate during World War II was a staggering 293,000 over a four-year duration of actual combat. The loss of lives due to the coronavirus infections are particularly tragic as so many are a direct result of extreme mismanagement at the federal level.

On Jan. 28 Trump was informed of the serious nature of this new coronavirus. It was compared in severity to the Spanish Flu pandemic responsible for 675,000 deaths here in the U.S. He chose to ignore centuries-old safeguards used to limit the spread of disease, the advice of global infectious experts, and just plain common sense.

The U.S. has some 4% of the global population with almost 22% of the global deaths. Even an average response to the pandemic would have produced less than 50,000 deaths. The parents of a sick child ignoring the advice of healthcare experts would be charged with felony child abuse in the event of the child’s death. Rather than being charged with voluntary manslaughter for the deaths of several hundred thousand citizens Trump is being hailed as national hero by the religious right, and by many of his followers.

John 11:35 Jesus wept. Jesus wept out of compassion for the grief of his friends after the death of their brother. I would imagine his tears are really flowing today over his grief for his people in their willful disregard for human life.
