Chaves County third-highest in new COVID cases Friday

Chaves County had the third-highest number of new cases of COVID-19 in Friday’s update from the New Mexico Department of Health.

The state reported 263 new cases Friday, 33 of which were in Chaves County.

Doña Ana County had the highest number of cases at 54, followed by Bernalillo County with 51. Eddy County reported 27, Lea County 18, San Juan County 12, and Curry, Sandoval and Santa Fe counties each reported 10. Fourteen other counties reported fewer than 10 cases each.

Statewide, the total number of cases to date is 28,487 and Chaves County’s total to date is 1,116.

Six deaths related to COVID-19 were reported Friday. Three were in Bernalillo County — a man in his 60s, a woman in her 70s and a woman in her 80s. The others were a man in his 50s from Doña Ana County, a man in his 80s from Roosevelt County and a man in his 60s from San Juan County. Three had been hospitalized and five had underlying health conditions.

As of Friday, 75 people were hospitalized in the state. The state has designated 16,020 cases as recovered, including 457 in Chaves County.

The Roswell Public Health Office, 200 E. Chisum St., will have drive-thru testing from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Registration is required by going to https://cvtestreg.nmhealth.org.
