Technical issue causes RISD board to cancel meeting

RISD Superintendent Michael Gottlieb says Tuesday night’s school board meeting had to be canceled when it was clear the technical difficulties could not be resolved. A technical issue caused the Roswell Independent School District school board to cancel its meeting while it was in progress Tuesday night. The meeting has been rescheduled for Oct. 22.

Due to the state’s health orders, only the board members and a small number of support staff are allowed in the board room during meetings. The meetings have been livestreamed on YouTube and public participation has been through the phone.

Superintendent Mike Gottlieb said when it became apparent Tuesday night the technical issue could not be resolved, he stopped the meeting and informed the board they would have to cancel. That was at about 7:20 p.m.

Gottlieb said the technical issue was apparent as the meeting began at 6 p.m. Director of Technology Royce Braggs signaled to Gottlieb and told him there was an issue with the livestream but said he thought he could fix it.

The board continued with the opening exercises, a planned executive session to discuss the status of negotiations with collective bargaining units, recognition for several staff and community members and some information items.

No action was taken during the time the board did meet, Gottlieb said.

Several attempts were made to restart the livestream while the meeting continued.

Braggs “kept restarting the computer thinking we have a software problem, we have this problem. We were trying to fix it not knowing what the problem was. He was trying to look at a variety of different issues,” Gottlieb said.

The problem was eventually determined to be a faulty audio cable, Gottlieb said.

“It was working before the meeting, which was interesting,” Gottlieb said. “It’s been in place for several years now since we built the place, so it’s just one of those things.”

The meeting has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 22 and will have the same agenda except for the executive session, Gottlieb said.

“As a review next Thursday, we’ll go over everything that we did and who we thanked and those things. At that point we’ll review so the community can hear that and then we’ll pick up with the agenda from there,” Gottlieb said.
