State also reports record number of new daily cases

A 50-year-old man has become the 19th person in Chaves County to succumb to COVID-19, according to a Saturday report of the New Mexico Department of Health.

State officials also reported a record number of new daily cases of 875.

The Health Department indicated that the local COVID fatality involved someone who had been hospitalized and had pre-existing conditions. His was one of five deaths announced on Saturday. The other four were a man in his 50s and woman in her 70s from Bernalillo County, a woman in her 80s from Doña Ana County and a woman in her 50s from Socorro County. All were hospitalized and three also had pre-existing conditions.

The total of coronavirus-related deaths in New Mexico is now 965, 2.35% of the 41,040 total COVID cases that have been reported in the state. While 20,765 have been reported as recovered, 264 people with the coronavirus are in the hospital. That means that 80% of the state’s general beds and 76% of intensive care beds are occupied.

On Saturday, 28 counties reported new cases, while there were 27 new cases among detainees in federal and state facilities. The highest counts by far were in the highly populated counties of Bernalillo with 251 new cases, and Doña Ana with 125 new cases.

Chaves County had the fifth-highest count with 47. That brings its total case count since March to 1,921, or 4.68% of the state’s total cases. The number of local residents who have recovered is 803.

Four nursing homes or long-term care facilities in Roswell are on the list of 59 in the state that have had a COVID case among staff or residents in the past 28 days. They are Casa Maria Health Care Center, Mission Arch Center, Sunset Villa Care Center and Village Retirement Community.
