Letter: Learn where candidates stand on this key issue

In the Declaration of Independence for these United States of America, we read these powerful words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” I believe it is certainly true that all of us have been created by almighty God, that we have indeed been “created equal,” and that this should both stir our hearts toward honoring our creator and cause us to seek to live our lives without any trace of racism.

Racism is unjustifiable by any logical test. After all, as the apostle Paul taught in Athens, “And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth …” (Acts 17:26a)

The Declaration of Independence goes on to assert that we have been endowed by God with “unalienable rights,” namely, “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Lots to contemplate there, but for the purposes of this letter, please consider the first of these rights: Life!

Concerning this most basic right, the stakes in next week’s election are high. I urge my fellow citizens to learn where the candidates stand on the very basic right to live life, and vote accordingly. I remember the personal story of a man whose own mother raised him without showing him love.

Lots of sadness there. But his own take on it was to be thankful, as he said something like, “Although she could not give me love, at least she gave me life.” Vote for life.
