11 more COVID-19 deaths in state

With only partial results available by Saturday afternoon, the state announced that New Mexico and Chaves County continued to have high numbers of new COVID-19 cases and deaths.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported at about 3:30 p.m. that the state added 592 new cases, bringing the total since March to 46,490. Chaves County had 41 new cases.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths was 11. That brings the total fatalities attributed to the coronavirus in the state to 1,018.

The deaths included three women and one man from Bernalillo County, ages 60s to 90s; two women and four men from Doña Ana County, ages 70s to 90s; and a man from Otero County in his 40s. All had been hospitalized or residents of long-term care facilities, and all but the Otero County resident had been diagnosed with preexisting conditions.

The largest concentration of cases in the state continue to be in Bernalillo County, with 187 cases, and Doña Ana County, with 127. With 41 new cases, Chaves County had the third-highest count. Nine other counties had new cases in the double-digits.

Chaves County, which now has a 11.3% positivity rate, has had 2,134 total COVID-19 cases since March, 845 of which are reported as recovered. Since March, 19 county residents have died due to the coronavirus.

Statewide, 21,570, or 46.4%, of COVID-19 patients have recovered. The total of 1,018 deaths so far reported is about 2.19% of total cases.

The state is also reporting that 354 coronavirus patients are now hospitalized. Occupancy of general hospital beds in the state is at 79%, while ICU beds in the state are 79% occupied.

There are now 973 detainees of four federal facilities and 745 detainees at nine state detention centers with COVID-19.

In addition, 69 nursing centers or long-term care facilities have reported a coronavirus case among staff or residents during the past 28 days. Those in Roswell are Casa Maria Health Care Center, Mission Arch Center, Sunset Villa Care Center and Village Retirement Center.

The Health Department indicated that it would update Saturday’s information as soon as new results were received.
