State reports 23 deaths related to COVID-19 on Thursday

The state announced 862 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and 23 deaths related to the virus in Thursday’s update.

The new cases included 53 in Chaves County and nine cases at the Roswell Correctional Center in Hagerman.

Twenty-seven counties and four correctional facilities reported new cases Thursday, giving the state a total of 51,110 since March. Chaves County’s total is 2,376. The Roswell Correctional Center, which reported its first case Sunday, now has a total of 22 cases.

Of the deaths announced Thursday, the ages of the deceased ranged from two people in their 40s to a woman in her 100s, according to the press release. Six were from Bernalillo County and seven from Doña Ana County, which remain hot spots in the state. Those counties reported 202 and 137 new cases, respectively.

The other deaths were people from Cibola, Curry, Eddy, Luna and Santa Fe counties and an inmate at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Valencia County.

The total number of deaths in the state is now at 1,082.

As of Thursday, 79% of the state’s general hospital beds are occupied, and 79% of ICU beds are filled. This includes the 400 people hospitalized for COVID-19 as well as other conditions.
