COVID-19 continues to spread at the Roswell Correctional Center with more new cases at the facility reported Friday than in Chaves County.

The correctional center reported 48 new cases among inmates in Friday’s update from the New Mexico Department of Health. Chaves County reported 38 new cases.

The numbers bring the correctional center’s total cases to 70 and the county’s to 2,414.

Statewide, 1,287 new cases of COVID-19 were announced Friday, bringing the state’s total to 52,394.

Bernalillo County reported 342 new cases and Doña Ana County 262. A total of 29 counties and three correctional facilities reported new cases Friday.

Six additional deaths related to COVID-19 were also reported Friday. Three were from Doña Ana County — a woman in her 60s, a man in his 40s and a man in his 80s. Two men in their 60s were both from Bernalillo County, and a woman in her 50s was from Luna County.

All six had been hospitalized. Two had underlying conditions.

The total number of deaths related to COVID-19 in New Mexico is 1,088.

In hospital capacity, the state reported 77% of general beds in all New Mexico hospitals were occupied and 77% of ICU beds are filled. That includes the 402 people hospitalized for COVID-19 and other conditions.

The state has declared 22,811 cases of COVID-19 as recovered, including 917 in Chaves County.

The county’s average number of new daily cases per 100,000 people from the two-week period of Oct. 13 to 26 is 48.7 and the test positivity rate is 11.3%, both above the state’s gating criteria targets for reopening schools and the economy.

Counties with fewer than eight new cases per day and a test positivity rate under 5% are able to operate with fewer restrictions, such as conducting the hybrid learning model in public schools and allowing visitation at nursing homes. Currently eight counties meet those criteria.
