The Sunrise Optimist Club is sponsoring the Optimist International Essay Contest again this year. This is a prestigious contest and is an opportunity for students to develop their own views around a central idea. In addition to the opportunity for written expression, participants have the chance to win a college scholarship.

The contest is open to students under age 19, who are not attending a post-secondary school, as of Oct. 1, 2020. Students wishing to participate in the essay contest can find out more about the contest rules and timeframe by contacting club chairman Gary Smith at 575-317-1402.

Contestants must write their essay on the official subject, “Reaching your Dreams by Choosing Optimism.” This is a broad subject and offers the opportunity for the contestant to readily express their views. The deadline is Feb. 1, 2021, but don’t put it off. This will allow time for judging at the club level and forwarding to the district by their Feb. 12, 2021 deadline. The essays can be mailed to 3214 Notting Hill Ave., Roswell, NM 88201.

The Optimist Club will judge the local students’ essays based on the theme of “Reaching your Dreams by Choosing Optimism” to determine the winners. Winners will receive cash prizes along with mediations. Prizes awarded will be for first place: $300; second place: $200; and third place: $100. The winning essay will be sent to the district level where college scholarships are available for top winners.

“Young students today have so many fresh ideas about the world and their future,” Club President Terri Garvey said. “As Optimists, it is our goal to encourage them and do what we can to bring out the best in each of them. This gives them a wonderful opportunity to tap into their creativity and pursue possible scholarships at the same time.”
