Letter: Governor battles virus, city council battles governor

I am saddened by the loss of lives, the human suffering and the loss of livelihood caused by this pandemic. I am also concerned our local elected officials appear to underestimate the severity of the destruction caused by this virus. I am also disappointed in their refusal to follow the advice of healthcare professionals in order to protect our citizens.

I fully agree with Lucie Hall in her Nov. 27 letter to the editor. We haven’t had leadership at the local level willing to enforce centuries-old safeguards used to limit the spread of disease, nor to enforce Gov. Lujan Grisham’s mandates, which are based on the recommendations of virtually every infectious disease expert worldwide.

Gov. Lujan Grisham is fighting a war against COVID-19 while our local elected officials are fighting a war against our governor. The governor is armed with modern science, the actual law, a compassionate populace, and time-proven methods to limit the spread of viral infections, while our local officials are lacking a single viable option to win this battle with our governor.

By ignoring the governor’s mandates our elected officials are increasing the loss of lives, the loss of livelihoods, human suffering, and prolonging the duration. It is past time for them to step up and follow our governor’s mandates in order to reduce the spread of this virus. Human life is precious, enforce wearing masks and social distancing.
