A Los Lunas man is dead following an early Wednesday morning crash north of Roswell.

John Chavez, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene, near milepost 115 on U.S. Highway 285, by the Office of the Medical Investigator, according to a press release issued Wednesday by New Mexico State Police.

Early findings from the investigation, according to the press release, indicate that Chavez, for reasons not known, was walking in the southbound lanes when he was struck by a 2019 Freightliner commercial motor vehicle which was also heading southbound.

The 48-year-old man from Albuquerque who was driving the vehicle was not injured. The crash remains under investigation, but the press release states that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
