Two more local COVID-19 deaths among 33 in state Friday

Two people from Chaves County were among the 33 deaths related to COVID-19 reported by the state health department on Friday.

Their deaths bring the week’s total to eight in Chaves County. The total since March is 48.

The most recent local deaths are a man in his 40s who had been hospitalized and a woman in her 70s who was a resident of the Casa Maria Health Care Center, 1601 S. Main St. Both had underlying health conditions, according to the daily update from the New Mexico Department of Health.

Of the other deceased, eight were from Bernalillo County; five were from McKinley County; four were from Doña Ana County; three were from Valencia County; two each were from Lea and Santa Fe counties; and one each were from Cibola, Curry, Otero, Sandoval, San Juan, Sierra and Socorro counties.

They ranged in age from two other people in their 40s from Doña Ana and Otero counties to four women and two men in their 90s from Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Socorro counties.

Thirty-one counties and nine correctional facilities reported a total of 2,080 new cases of COVID-19 in Friday’s update, including 99 in Chaves County.

Bernalillo County reported the most cases at 755 followed by Doña Ana County at 224.

The state’s total number of cases since March is 104,935. Chaves County’s total is 5,152. The Roswell Correctional Center has reported no new cases recently and remains at a total of 223.

As of Friday, 934 people were hospitalized in the state for COVID-19.

Chaves County averaged 174.7 new daily cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people between Nov. 17 and Nov. 30, and had a test positivity rate of 25.4%, placing it in the Red Zone, or very high risk of viral spread, in the state’s risk assessment system.
