Joyce Naom Young was born January 17, 1921, in Stonewall, Oklahoma to Audie B. and Effie D. Malone. The family moved from Oklahoma to Roswell, NM when Joyce was four years old.

She was three during the Roswell incident and said, “bluntly it was no weather balloon”.

She grew up in Roswell and received her education in the Roswell public schools. She graduated from Roswell high School where she was active in sports and marching band. She continued her education at ENMU-Portales.

After World War II began and Pearl Harbor she served a civil service appointment and went to work at the Roswell army air field (latter know as walker air force base). She supervised prop-entry Records Unit at the Supply Depot and also trained new employees. After nine years Joyce, became the civilian loan officer for the air force aid society. Joyce worked there for three years.

During this time, she met her future husband and was married for 58 years to Melvin E. Young Jr. of Toledo, Ohio on June 2, 1950 in the First Baptist Church of Roswell. After a few more years of working Joyce became a homemaker and a stay-at-home-mom. Caring for her husband and two sons.

Wherever the family lived Joyce was always active in the church, community, and youth activities. Any projects or activities her family was involved in she was there to support and help. Joyce belonged to the First Baptist church and over the years sang in the choirs, taught adult SS classes, participated in the W.M.U., served on the bereavement committee and then special accession committees.

Joyce enjoyed golf, gardening, crossword puzzles, and spectator sports. She loved her family, her pets, and her dear friends.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Mark and daughter-in-law Victoria; Randy and daughter-in-law Dr. Karen Balkman. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Roswell Humane society, The Salvation Army, or the First Baptist Church.
