County’s 63 new cases on Saturday among 1,442 in New Mexico

Another Chaves County resident has died due to COVID-19, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

The county’s 78th death since March was among the 27 fatalities in the state reported on Saturday. There have now been 2,155 people in New Mexico to succumb to COVID.

The Chaves County decedent was a man in his 80s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions. The other deaths included seven from Bernalillo County, four from Doña Ana County, three from San Juan County, two each from Lea and Sierra counties, and one each from Cibola, Colfax, Curry, McKinley, Roosevelt, Sandoval and Socorro counties. An inmate in his 70s from the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Valencia County also passed away.

Chaves County reported 63 new cases Saturday, bringing its total case count to 6,155. Of those, 2,625 are considered recovered. A ZIP code in Roswell — 88203 — ranked ninth in the state Saturday for the most new cases. It had 33 of the county’s and state’s new cases.

In addition, the state-run Roswell Correctional Center near Hagerman has 225 inmates who have COVID.

Statewide, 1,442 new COVID cases were reported Saturday among 32 of the state’s 33 counties and at one federal detention facility and five state correctional centers. Bernalillo, McKinley and San Juan counties accounted for 730 of the new cases in New Mexico.

The total cases in New Mexico have now reached 128,930, with 53,278 (41.3%) considered recovered. Current COVID hospitalizations are at 891, with total COVID hospitalizations in 2020 at 8,694.

The number of federal detainees with COVID-19 now totals 1,090. COVID-positive inmates in state facilities is at 2,159.

The list of long-term care facilities with at least one staff member or resident with COVID during the past 28 days also continues to grow. There are now 140 facilities on the list, including six in Roswell. They are Avamere, Beehive Homes, Casa Maria Health Care Center, Mission Arch Center, Sunset Villa Center and the Village Retirement Community.
