Letter: Knowing ‘the price of everything, and the value of nothing’

Paul J. Gessing’s choice to envelop Deal in quotes no doubt denotes sarcasm on the libertarian’s part. His recent guest op-ed, titled “Netflix ‘Deal’ A Blow To State’s Finances,” made lightning-rod contact with the well known Oscar Wilde quote, “a cynic is a man who knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing.”

The Rio Grande Foundation President tirelessly enumerated the costs that would be shouldered by the taxpayers to help set up the Netflix production facility in Albuquerque, but chose not to concede/mention anything of value resulting from the streaming monolith’s presence.

I know that screenwriters, content creators, filmmakers, acting aspirants, construction workers, to name a few professions, definitely won’t see their new employer as a “A Blow To State’s Finances.” Moreover, these newly created jobs will be paying state income tax.

Paul also characterized New Mexico political leadership as economically ignorant. I would like to know if Gessing does not want Netflix in New Mexico unconditionally, or if he just believes our leadership lost the negotiation. I wager it is the former.
