County records almost 300 COVID-19 cases Thursday

Chaves County recorded its highest single-day number of new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday — 293 — according to the daily update from the New Mexico Department of Health. One local death was also reported.

Previously, the highest number of cases for Chaves County reported in the state’s daily update was 191 on Nov. 18.

Thursday’s record was the second-highest in the state for the day, behind Bernalillo County at 487, and more than Doña Ana County, which had 259.

Chaves County’s case numbers this week had been much lower, totaling only 143 Sunday through Wednesday.

Twenty-seven counties and four correctional institutions reported a total of 1,927 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. Chaves County now has had a total of 6,591 cases.

There were 29 deaths related to the virus reported statewide Thursday.

The local death was a woman in her 60s who had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions.

Of the other deaths, 12 were from Bernalillo County; two each from Cibola, Lea, Sandoval, San Juan, Sierra and Valencia counties; and one each from Colfax, Doña Ana, Roosevelt and Santa Fe counties.

The total number of deaths related to COVID-19 in the state is now 2,272, including 82 in Chaves County.

As of Thursday, 811 people were hospitalized in the state for COVID-19.
