After a spike of nearly 300 cases on Christmas Eve, Chaves County continues to report lower numbers of new COVID-19 cases with 30 on Sunday and 22 on Monday. Two more local deaths related to the virus were also reported Monday in the New Mexico Department of Health daily update.

The state also amended the local number of deaths after identifying duplicate reports.

The two deaths reported Monday were a woman in her 80s who was a resident of the Mission Arch Center, 3200 Mission Arch Drive, and a man in his 40s who had been hospitalized. Both had underlying health conditions.

The state corrected the county’s number of COVID-19 related deaths to 88 after identifying two deaths that were each erroneously reported twice, according to the press release.

With 30 deaths reported statewide Sunday and 36 on Monday, the total in New Mexico is now 2,380.

Statewide, the numbers of new COVID-19 cases also are down compared to earlier in December, with less than 1,500 cases combined reported Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, 29 counties and five correctional institutions reported 747 new cases. On Monday, 25 counties reported 700 new cases.

Statewide, the total number of cases since March is 138,659. In Chaves County, it’s 6,782.

As of Monday, 788 people were hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19.

From Dec. 1 to Dec. 14, Chaves County had an average of 121.2 new cases of COVID-19 per day per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 21.4%, placing it in the red, or very high risk, level in the state’s Red to Green risk assessment system. That data is scheduled to be updated Wednesday.
