Editor’s note: This story has been updated to indicate the deceased died at a local hospital before being airlifted to another medical center.

A portion of U.S. 285 southbound near Dexter was shut down for two and a half hours Saturday evening following a two-vehicle collision that left one person dead and others injured.

“There were injuries involved and one of those injuries did result in a fatality,” Charles Yslas, Chaves County Undersheriff said late Saturday night. The deceased, he said, died at a local hospital before being airlifted out to another medical center.

No details were provided about the other individuals injured.

Deputies responded at 5:27 p.m. to the crash, which occurred at mile marker 96 near the intersection of U.S. 285 and Orchard Park Road in the northbound lane. Yslas said the Sheriff’s Office did briefly shut down the highway and diverted traffic.
