No COVID-19 deaths, low case numbers locally Sunday, Monday

Chaves County recorded lower numbers of new cases of COVID-19 Sunday and Monday with no related deaths.

In daily updates from the New Mexico Department of Health, Chaves County reported 30 new cases on Sunday and 40 on Monday. The county’s total number of cases since March is now 7,141. The state reported Monday that five cases in Chaves County had been identified as duplicates and total case counts had been corrected.

Additionally, one new case was reported among inmates at the Roswell Correctional Center on Sunday. The center’s total number of cases is now 226.

Statewide, there were 1,033 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and 936 on Monday. The state’s total cases are 147,315. Bernalillo County had the most cases each day, with 345 on Sunday and 279 on Monday.

Seventeen deaths were reported Sunday and 23 on Monday. Bernalillo County had 11 deaths over the two days; McKinley County reported six; Doña Ana had four; Santa Fe County had three deaths; Curry, Eddy and San Juan counties each had two deaths; and Cibola, Lea, Lincoln, Luna, Mora, Otero, Roosevelt, Sandoval, Socorro and Valencia each reported one death.

The total number of deaths related to COVID-19 in New Mexico is now 2,574.

As of Monday, 703 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in New Mexico.

The state has designated 69,903 cases as recovered.

From Dec. 15 to 28, Chaves County averaged 98.2 new cases of COVID-19 per day per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 20.62%. Those numbers place Chaves County in the Red Level, or very high risk category, in the state’s risk assessment system.
