Three local men among state’s COVID-19 deaths Tuesday

Three Chaves County men were among the 20 deaths related to COVID-19 announced in Tuesday’s daily update from the New Mexico Department of Health.

The deceased are a man in his 60s who had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions; a man in his 80s who had been hospitalized; and a man in his 90s who had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions. Their deaths bring the county’s total to 97, according to the NMDOH COVID-19 dashboard.

Of the other deaths reported Tuesday, nine were from Bernalillo County; three from Eddy County; and one each were from Roosevelt, Sandoval, San Juan, Santa Fe and Sierra counties.

The state’s total number of deaths related to COVID-19 is now 2,594.

Twenty-seven counties and the Roswell Correctional Center reported a total of 1,201 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, including 47 in Chaves County.

Bernalillo County reported the highest number of cases at 484. Doña Ana County reported 117 and San Juan County reported 104. Thirteen of the counties reported fewer than 10 cases each.

Tuesday’s report brings the state’s total number of COVID-19 cases since March to 148,499. Chaves County’s total is 7,188 and the Roswell Correctional Center’s is now 227.

As of Tuesday, 740 people are hospitalized for COVID-19 in the state.

The state has designated 70,737 cases as recovered.

From Dec. 15 to 28, Chaves County averaged 98.2 new cases of COVID-19 per day per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 20.62%. Those numbers place Chaves County in the Red Level, or very high risk category, in the state’s risk assessment system.
