County reports 77 new COVID-19 cases, 1 death Thursday

Chaves County reported 77 new cases of COVID-19 and one death related to the virus on Thursday.

The deceased is a woman in her 70s who had been hospitalized, according to the daily update from the New Mexico Department of Health.

Thirty-nine deaths were reported statewide Thursday, along with 1,841 new cases in 31 counties and two correctional institutions.

Thursday’s death brings Chaves County’s total to 101, according to the NMDOH online dashboard.

Bernalillo County reported the most deaths at 15; San Juan County had four; McKinley County had three; Sandoval and Torrance counties had two; and Cibola, Colfax, Doña Ana, Eddy, Grant, Lea, Roosevelt, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro and Valencia counties all had one.

Bernalillo County also led the state in the number of new cases, with 449. San Juan County reported 231. Sandoval County had 143 cases. Eddy County had 131.

The county’s total number of cases to date is 7,339, adjusted for one case that was determined by the health department to be a duplicate. The state’s total is 151,819.

As of Thursday, 722 people are hospitalized in the state for COVID-19. The health department has designated 74,235 cases as recovered.

From Dec. 15 to 28, Chaves County averaged 98.2 new cases of COVID-19 per day per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 20.62%. Those numbers place Chaves County in the Red Level, or very high risk category, in the state’s risk assessment system.
