One death, 76 new COVID cases Friday in Chaves County

Chaves County reported one death related to COVID-19 and 76 new cases in Friday’s update from the New Mexico Department of Health.

The deceased is a man in his 40s who had underlying health conditions, according to the press release. His death brings the county’s total to 102.

Statewide, 30 deaths were reported Friday, bringing the total to 2,710. Bernalillo County again had the most deaths with eight. Doña Ana County had four; Lea County had three; Otero, Rio Arriba and San Juan counties each had two; and Colfax, Curry, Lincoln, Luna, Quay, Roosevelt, Socorro and Torrance counties each had one.

All but one of New Mexico’s 33 counties, along with two correctional institutions, reported a total of 1,645 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total since March to 153,456. Chaves County’s total is 7,415.

Bernalillo County led the state with 430 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 202 and San Juan County with 182.

As of Friday, 703 people were hospitalized in the state with COVID-19.

The Department of Health has designated 75,883 cases as recovered.

From Dec. 15 to 28, Chaves County averaged 98.2 new cases of COVID-19 per day per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 20.62%. Those numbers place Chaves County in the Red Level, or very high risk category, in the state’s risk assessment system.
