The number of adults with COVID-19 in inpatient beds at Roswell’s two acute care hospitals for the first seven days of January increased by 12 compared to the previous week, according to information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

But the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds decreased by six, the fourth week that ICU bed usage has gone down in the local area.

The most recent national hospital utilization report released Monday by the federal department covers the seven-day period of Jan. 1 to Jan. 7. It shows that 159 adults confirmed to have COVID-19 occupied inpatient beds in Roswell, 135 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center and 24 at Lovelace Regional Hospital.

Adults confirmed with COVID-19 in ICU beds totaled 48, 40 at ENMMC and 8 at Lovelace.

There were no pediatric COVID-19 cases reported at either hospital for that seven-day time frame.

With those numbers, the local hospitals had 28.8% of adult inpatient beds and 40.3% of ICU beds used by COVID-19 patients for Jan. 1 to Jan. 7.

For the previous seven-day period, Dec. 25 to Dec. 31, the hospitals had 147 adult COVID-19 cases in regular inpatient beds and 54 in ICU beds. For Dec. 18 to Dec. 24, there were 180 COVID-19 patients in inpatient beds in Roswell and 79 in ICU beds. For Dec. 11 to Dec. 17, the totals were 201 COVID-19 patients in adult inpatient beds and 84 in ICU beds.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, the state had 333 ICU beds at its hub hospitals occupied by COVID-19 patients during its last update of the data a week ago. Eastern New Mexico Medical Center is one of those facilities. One of the eight gating criteria for reopening the state is ICU bed usage at hub hospitals, with fewer than 439 being the goal.
