Four locals among 38 COVID-19 deaths in state Friday

Four Chaves County residents were among the 38 deaths related to COVID-19 reported in the daily update Friday from the New Mexico Department of Health.

The deceased are a woman in her 60s and three men in their 70s. One of the men was a resident of Casa de Oro Center in Las Cruces. One of the other men had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions.

Bernalillo County reported 14 deaths Friday; Doña Ana County reported four; Sandoval County reported three; Eddy, Lea and Otero counties each reported two; and Colfax, Curry, Grant, Guadalupe, McKinley, Roosevelt and Sierra counties each reported one.

The total number of deaths in the state related to COVID-19 is now 2,874, including 117 from Chaves County.

Thirty-one counties and two correctional facilities reported 1,266 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Chaves County had 77.

Bernalillo County led the new reports at 291 cases followed by Doña Ana County with 190.

The state’s total number of cases since March is 161,805, including 7,754 in Chaves County.

As of Friday, 670 people were hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19.

Chaves County’s two-week average of new daily cases per 100,000 people as of Wednesday was 85.6 and its test positivity rate was 17.51%, placing it in the very high risk Red Zone in the state’s Red to Green COVID-19 risk assessment system.
