The two acute care hospitals in Roswell had 123 adult in-patient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients from Jan. 8 to Jan. 14, a decrease from the previous seven-day period, according to a federal report.

The Monday update of a weekly COVID-19 hospitalization report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicated that Lovelace Regional Hospital had 14 adult in-patient beds used by confirmed COVID-19 patients for the seven-day period starting Jan. 8, while Eastern New Mexico Medical Center had 109.

No pediatric hospital beds at Lovelace were used for COVID-19 patients, while four or fewer pediatric hospital beds were utilized by confirmed COVID-19 cases at ENMMC. When hospitals report four or fewer beds in use it is signified by the number -999,999 in the data as a safeguard for patient privacy.

Adult ICU bed use for confirmed COVID-19 patients at the two hospitals during the seven-day period totaled 37, five at Lovelace and 32 at ENMMC. That was 11 fewer than the previous reporting period.

The 123 adult COVID-19 in-patient beds used equated to about 22% of all the 553 adult in-patient beds available over a seven-day period at the two hospitals. The COVID-19 ICU bed use was about 31.1% of the 119 ICU beds available.

But ICU beds were in short supply in the local area because of non-COVID patient use. When counting all patients, 99 total ICU beds were used during the seven-day period, or 83.2% of those available.

The Monday report indicates decreased COVID-19 bed use compared to previous weeks. From Jan. 1 to Jan. 7, 159 adult beds were occupied by confirmed COVID-19 cases, 135 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center and 24 at Lovelace Regional Hospital. COVID-19 ICU beds used totaled 48, 40 at ENMMC and eight at Lovelace.

For the previous seven day period, Dec. 25 to Dec. 31, the hospitals had 147 adult in-patient beds used by COVID-19 patients (115 at ENMMC and 32 at Lovelace) and 54 ICU beds used by confirmed COVID-19 patients (41 at Eastern and 13 at Lovelace).
