22Robert Contreras Sanchez living in Roswell, New Mexico passed away on December 13th, 2020 at the age of 67. On December 5th, Robert was flown to The University Medical Center of El Paso, Texas for emergency surgery caused by a Hemorrhagic Stroke. He passed eight days later with his family’s love and care by his side.

Robert was born on December 28th, 1953 to a WWII Veteran Godfrey Sanchez and Nicky Contreras Sanchez in La Luz, NM. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1972 where he met the love of his life, Elfida (Jeff) Lopez, and married her while she carried their first baby boy following another baby boy four years later. Robert attended Alamogordo’s community college for a brief period and worked until he moved to Roswell, NM in 1977.

A few years later, a split in marriage led to a mutual agreement that Robert would raise his two sons as their mother, Jeff, continued to be a part of their lives. Robert was then employed at Transportation Manufacturing Cooperation (TMC) also known as Nova Bus where he worked for the next 25 years along with many coworkers who became lifelong friend.

This man was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life of morals with hard work, athletics, and Catholicism. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world and would often be eager to confirm his kids and grandkids were safe and living well. He had a passion for wild game as a Deer Hunter, under his father Godfrey Sanchez, until he passed while heroically saving the lives of American GIs in a Holloman Air Force Base explosion near White Sands. Robert was passionate and talented in Track and Football while attending Alamogordo High, and guided his sons in his footsteps. He continued to stay active in his early years by uniting with TMC friends on a softball team, Los Galleros.

As a competitor, Robert would weightlift, play league volleyball at ENMUR, and for fun enjoyed playing basketball with friends and family. Overall, he was considered a survivor and loved to go camping in the mountains with his family. The later years of his life, he would work around his house, relax with a cup of coffee, listen to history, and collect fossils and unique stones creating a story of how they came to be just by looking at them. His grandkids knew him as a loving and wise man who they would look to when help was needed with the saying “Grandpa Can Fix Anything!”
