Local COVID hospitalizations drop in latest federal report

Local hospital beds used for COVID-19 patients for the last few days of January and the first days of February decreased for the second week, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

COVID-19 bed usage was down about 19 compared to the previous seven-day period.

Total hospital beds in Roswell used for COVID-19 patients from Jan. 29 to Feb. 4 totaled somewhere between 159 and 162, according to the data released Sunday night. Adult in-patient beds occupied by confirmed COVID cases were 118 — 12 at Lovelace Regional Hospital and 106 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Pediatric beds used for COVID-19 patients was zero at Lovelace and somewhere between one and four at ENMMC. The exact number of pediatric cases at ENMMC cannot be known because the federal report uses the number -999,999 to denote four or fewer patients as a way to ensure patient privacy.

No youth COVID-19 cases occupied Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds at either hospital for Jan. 29 to Feb. 4. But adult ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 patients for that time period was about 40, 39 at ENMMC and four or fewer at Lovelace.

Adult COVID-19 cases used about 33.6% of the available 119 ICU beds at Roswell’s two main hospitals. Non-ICU COVID-19 cases occupied about 20% of the 595 in-patient beds.

Total hospital bed use for all types of patients in the local area remained high, with 98 of the 119 ICU beds, or 82.4%, used during the seven days. About 64% of all in-patient beds were used, or 381 of the 595 beds available over a seven-day period.

For the prior seven-day period, Jan. 22 to Jan. 28, there were about 178 beds used for COVID-19 cases. Confirmed COVID-19 patients occupied 132 regular adult beds, 110 at ENMMC and 22 at Lovelace. Meanwhile, at least 46 COVID patients were in adult ICU beds, with ENMMC reporting 46 and Lovelace reporting four or fewer. The number of pediatric beds used for confirmed COVID-19 cases was zero at ENMMC and four or fewer at Lovelace.

From Jan. 15 to Jan. 21, total COVID-19 patients occupying local hospital beds totaled about 188. The breakdown on that is 135 adult in-patient COVID-19 bed uses, 123 at ENMMC and 12 at Lovelace. Adult ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 cases was 53, 46 at ENMMC and seven at Lovelace. Lovelace had zero pediatric COVID-19 cases, while ENMMC reported four or fewer.
