Local COVID cases go up by 37, deaths by 4

Chaves County had another four deaths related to COVID-19 and 37 new coronavirus cases on Friday and Saturday, according to information released on those two days by the New Mexico Department of Health.

Friday saw 12 new cases, while 25 were reported for Saturday. The four deaths were reported on Friday and involved three people with underlying health conditions, a man in his 30s, a man in his 90s and a woman in her 60s. Another man in his 90s who passed away had been a resident of Casa Maria Health Care Center.

Three long-term care centers in Roswell remain on the list of facilities with at least one COVID case among staff or residents during the last 28 days. They are Casa Maria Health Care Center, Mission Arch Center and Village Retirement Community.

Statewide, 978 new cases and 37 additional deaths were counted for Friday and Saturday. Those numbers break down to 571 new cases on Saturday and 407 on Friday, as well as 23 deaths on Friday and 14 on Saturday.

Chaves County now has had 8,504 total COVID cases and 144 deaths. Another 229 detainees of the state-operated Roswell Correctional Center near Hagerman also have been diagnosed with COVID. Of the county’s total COVID count, those considered recovered total 6,020, or 70.8%.

The statewide total of COVID cases since March 2020 is 180,289, with 118,926, or about 66%, categorized as recovered. Deaths since March 2020 have totaled 3,516. There are now 341 people statewide hospitalized due to COVID, while there have been 12,657 COVID hospitalizations since 2020.
