Candidates for the next superintendent of the Roswell Independent School District will likely be selected at Tuesday evening’s regular meeting of the RISD school board.

The board will meet in executive session near the end of the meeting to discuss applicants, according to the agenda, then will meet in open session for a discussion and possible vote on candidates to interview. The board will also discuss and possibly vote on a timeline for the superintendent search as well as dates and locations for the interviews.

The board will also have a special meeting starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday for hearings regarding the discharge of certified employees.

The hearings will be conducted in executive session, which is allowed to discuss limited personnel matters. The board will go into closed session for a discharge hearing of a certified educational assistant at 10 a.m. and for the discharge hearing of a certified instructor at 2 p.m., according to the agenda.

Superintendent Mike Gottlieb said he could not comment on the hearings, citing personnel issues, and no further information was included in the agenda for the special meeting.

However, possible votes on each hearing are scheduled following the executive session. Those must be conducted in a session open to the public. Gottlieb said Friday afternoon he was not sure if that portion of the special meeting would be livestreamed on YouTube. He was waiting to hear from the district’s attorney on how to handle the open session portion of the special meeting under the state’s public health order.

Since the health order was issued, the board has allowed only board members and a small number of support staff in the board room at the Administrative and Educational Services Complex, 300 N. Kentucky Ave., with the meetings streamed on YouTube for the public.

That will be the case for the regular meeting, which will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Anyone wishing to speak at that meeting should contact the superintendent’s office by 4 p.m. Monday at 575-627-2511. Those wishing to speak will receive a phone call during the meeting and will be allowed three minutes to speak.

In addition to the superintendent search, the board will hear information on student progress, promotion and retention and updates on remote and hybrid learning.

The board will also vote on accepting several donations from area businesses and organizations including school supplies from Walmart, bottled water from various local groups and face masks from Roswell Ford.

Board members will vote on nominations for the New Mexico Student Achievement Awards, an Open Meetings Act resolution, a request for proposals for a five-year master facilities plan, a resolution in support of band and chorus, and possible reorganization of the board.

The board will also hear a report on the recent General Obligation Bond sale to fund future capital projects including the renovations and construction at Mesa Middle School and Nancy Lopez Elementary School.
