State reports 1 local COVID death, 7 cases over 2 days

The number of people testing positive for or dying due to factors related to COVID-19 continued to decrease Friday and Saturday, when Chaves County reported only seven new cases and one death during the two days.

New cases in the area totaled two for Friday and five for Saturday, while the death was reported on Saturday.

The Chaves County resident who died was described as a man in his 60s with underlying conditions who had been a resident of Mission Arch Center of Roswell. The county has now had 157 deaths since March 2020.

The number of local people who have recovered from COVID is counted at 8,043, or 92.6% of the total 8,682 cases in Chaves since March 2020.

Statewide, 466 new cases and nine deaths occurred, according to information released by the New Mexico Department of Health. Those totals included 268 cases and six deaths on Friday, and 198 new cases and three deaths on Saturday.

New Mexico’s total case count during the past year is now at 188,167, with the state giving the number of deaths since March 2020 at 3,850. The state’s total death count rose by only one from Friday to Saturday, because the state discovered that two deaths of residents of Rio Arriba and Doña Ana that had occurred in November 2020 had been counted twice in 2020.

New Mexicans with COVID who are considered recovered now totals 164,614, or 87.5% of the 188,167 cases that have been reported in the state during the past year. The number of people hospitalized with COVID in New Mexico hospitals is now 127.

Long-term facilities in the state that have reported a COVID case among staff or residents in the past 28 days is at 27. Mission Arch Center is the only Roswell care center on the list.
