Chaves County nearing 20% fully vaccinated

The number of people in Chaves County who have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine has increased since last week.

Of the 49,578 people in the county age 16 or older, almost 15,000 or 30% have received at least one dose and just under 9,000, or 18%, are fully vaccinated, data on the NMDOH COVID-19 vaccine dashboard shows. More than 14,000 people, or 29% of those 16 or older in Chaves County, have registered for the vaccine.

On Monday, the health department announced New Mexicans age 75 or older who have registered for the vaccine will no longer need event codes to schedule appointments for vaccines. Instead, they will receive invitations to schedule appointments.

The state will also expand opportunities for older adults to receive vaccinations, including senior center vaccination events each week and partnerships to reach those who are homebound.

The state and federal agencies have administered 1,168,186 doses of vaccine and received 1.3 million. Almost 728,000 New Mexicans, or 43%, have received at least one dose and 447,588, or 27%, are fully vaccinated.

The Department of Health announced 367 new cases of COVID-19 in two days. There were 185 on Sunday in 19 counties and the Otero County Processing Center. On Monday, the department reported 182 new cases in 21 counties. Chaves County had four cases on Sunday and two on Monday.

The total number of cases in the state is 191,230, with 91% of those considered recovered. In Chaves County, 96% of the 8,730 cases are considered recovered.

Two deaths related to COVID-19 were announced in Sunday’s update and none on Monday. The deceased were a man in his 70s from Bernalillo County who had been hospitalized and a woman in her 60s from Sandoval County who had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions.

There have been 3,925 deaths in the state including 163 in Chaves County.

As of Monday, 99 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in the state.

Chaves County is in the Green Level of the state’s COVID-19 risk assessment system. From March 3 to March 22, the county averaged 4 new cases per day per 100,000 people and had a test positivity rate of 1.33%.
